| Pharmacology Actions: |
Urinary effect: Decoctions of Sclerotium Poriae Cocos (fu ling) had no diuretic effect when given in normal dosage to rabbits, rats, or humans, or intravenously to dogs. However, intraperitoneal injections into healthy rabbits and decoctions of the herb given to rats that had adrenalectomies did increase the excretion of sodium. Some researchers have speculated that this effect may be related to the rather high concentration of potassium in the herb.
Central nervous system effect: Sclerotium Poriae Cocos (fu ling) had a tranquilizing effect on mice.
Effect on smooth muscle: Sclerotium Poriae Cocos (fu ling) had a direct relaxing effect on rabbit intestine specimens.
Endocrine effect: Preparations of Sclerotium Poriae Cocos (fu ling) reduced plasma glucose.

| Actions and Indications: |
Promotes urination and leaches out dampness: for urinary difficulty, diarrhea, or edema due to stagnation of fluids or dampness. Also used in cases of scanty urine due to damp-heat (more often in its red form).
Strengthens the Spleen and harmonizes the middle burner: for Spleen deficiency compounded by dampness with such symptoms as loss of appetite, diarrhea, and epigastric distention.
Strengthens the Spleen and transforms phlegm: for Spleen deficiency with congested fluids in which phlegm moves upward with such symptoms as palpitation, headache, dizziness, and a thick, greasy tongue coating.
Quiets the Heart and calms the spirit: for palpitations, insomnia, or forgetfulness.
