| Pharmacology Actions: |
The ethanol extract of
the fruit by IP to mice increased phenol red
excretion in the respiratory tract, suggesting a
possible expectorant action. Bilobol 500 mg/kg
was inactive on the frog heart but produced
transient hypotension in rabbits. The effect of
ginkgotoxin on the isolated frog heart was
characterized by an initial stimulation suc-
ceeded by inhibition, and even cardiac arrest;
low doses caused vasoconstriction, and high
doses caused the opposite effect. It had
inhibitory effect on many common pathogens
to different extent. The kernel had an astrin-
gent action. The extract had therapeutic effect
on experimental cerebral ischemia in rats.
Ginkgolic acid and ginkgotoxin had hemolytic
action. Ginkgotoxin exerted a paralyzing action
on the CNS of frogs. The leaf alcohol extract
dilated the isolated coronary vessels and
relaxed the tracheal smooth muscle and showed
spasmolytic action on isolated intestines of
guinea pigs. The leaf decoction also showed
antibacterial effect.
