The drug contains alkaloids
including strychnine, brucine, and traces of
¦Á- colubrine, ¦Â-colubrine, isostrychnine,
pseudostrychnine, pseudo brucine, vomicine,
novacine, icajine, as well as loganin, chloro-
genic acid, etc..

| Pharmacology Actions: |
Strychnine has a stimu-
lant effect on the whole central nervous
system. It works first on the spinal reflex,
then on the respiratory and vasomotor centers
of the medulla oblongata. It can enhance the
function of the sensory area of the cerebral
cortex. Strychnine, with a strong bitter taste,
reflexedly increased gastric secretion upon
stimulation of the taste, thereby promoting the
digestive function and improving the appetite.
Brucine by intragastric administration to mice
at 50mg/kg showed significant antitussive
action which was stronger than that of codeine
and also significant expectorant action at
40mg/kg in mice which was not very different
form that of ammonium chloride. The decoction
(1:2) and 0.1% brucine showed inhibitory action
against some pathogenic bacteria. The lethal
dose of brucine in dogs was 8mg/kg IV.

The drug is used as
analgesic, antiswelling agent;for the treatment
of protracted arthritis, numbness, paralysis,
traumatic injury, boils and sores, sequela of
poliomyelitis, rheumatoid arthralgia.
