| Constituents: |
Chebula fruit contains about 21%-
37% of tannin, including chebulinic acid, che-
bulagic acid, corilagin, terchebin, ellagic
acid, quinic acid, etc.. It also contains enno-
side A, chebulin, vitamin, Tannase, polyphenol
oxidase, etc..

| Pharmacology Actions: |
The fruit showed
astringent, anti-diarrhea actions, for it con-
tains large quantities of tannins. In vitro
studies, proved that it was effective against
several Shigella dysenteriae. Its 100% aqueous
decoction showed antibacterial effects.In vitro
it showed good effect against Salmonella typhi.
The alcohol extraction extracted by hydro-
chloride or ether showed stronger antibacterial
and anti-fungus action. Chebulin extracted by
80% alcohol from dried fruits showed
antispasmodic action on smooth muscle like
papaverine.The compound formula containing this
herb was reported to have some antineoplastic
effect.

The drug is used as
astringent; for the treatment of protracted
diarrhea with hematochezia and prolapse of the
rectum, chronic cough with sore throat and
hoarseness of voice.
