The fruit contains volatile oil
consisting mainly of citral, ¦Á-ylangene, ¦Á-
chamigrene, ¦Â-chamigrene, chamigrenal, also
contains schizandrin,schizandrin A,schizandrin B,
pseudo-schizandrin,schizandrol A,B,schizandrin C,
gomisin D, E, F, G, etc.. Its seed contains
deoxyschizandrin, ¦Ã-schizandrin, wuweizisu C,
wuweiziester A, B, etc..

| Pharmacology Actions: |
The ethanol extracts
of fruit and its kernel markedly decreased the
elevated SGPT of experimental animals intoxi-
cated by carbon tetrachloride. It had stimulant
action on various central nervous systems and
strengthened regulatory ability of cerebral
cortex. Its decoction significantly stimulated
respiration in experimental animals, causing
deep and rapid breathing. Its preparation also
induced rhythmic contractions of rabbit uterus
both in vivo and in vitro. It showed vasodi-
latory actions in animals. In vitro,its ethanol
extract exhibited an inhibitory activity
against many pathogenic bacteria.It also showed
antiviral actions both in vivo and in vitro. It
could regulate gastric secretion and promote
bile secretion. In vitro it also showed ascari-
cidal effect. Like ginseng, it had adaptogen-
like action, increasing the resistance of the
body against nonspecific stimuli.

The drug is used to
arrest discharges, to promote fluid secretion,
to tonify the kidney; for the treatment of
chronic cough and asthma, protracted diarrhea,
spontaneous or night sweating, impairment of
body fluid with thirst.
