| Pharmacology Actions: |
The alcohol precipitated substance of the leaf
decoction or the
ethanol extract or the flavone produced an
antitussive effect in mice with SO2-induced
cough by IP. The phenol red excretion test in
mice showed that it had a marked expectorant
effect.The leaf decoction relaxed the isolated
bronchial smooth muscle of mice and guinea
pigs and also partially blocked the action of
acetylcholine. It significantly shortened the
bleeding time in mice and the capillary coagu-
lation time in rabbits, suggesting the
presence of hemostatic effect. The leaf decoc-
tion markedly minimized the spontaneous acti-
vity in mice and prolonged pentobarbital
sodium-induced sleep, but did not antagonize
caffeine-induced convulsion. Intravenous
or intragastric administration of the alcohol-
precipitated substance of the leaf decoction
to anesthetized cats caused a slight fall of
the blood pressure and vasodilatation of the
isolated rabbit ears.In vitro, the leaf decoc-
tion showed inhibitory action against many
pathogens and against flu virus and herpes
virus. The LD50 of the leaf decoction in mice
was 15.2g/kg IP.

Arborvitae Leaf is used
as bloodcooling agent, astringent and hair
darkening agent; for the treatment of hema-
turesis, epistaxis, hemoptysis, hair losing
due to heated blood; Arborvitae Seed is used
as cardiac tonic, sedative, antihidrotic and
emollient; for the treatment of insomnia with
fidget and palpitation, night sweating,
constipation.
