| Pharmacology Actions: |
Laxative effect: Folium Sennae (fan xie ye) contains many anthraquinone glycoside derivatives. Therefore, like Radix et Rhizoma Rhei (da huang), it has a strong laxative action that may be accompanied by abdominal pain. in addition, the hepatic metabolite of sennoside A and B stimulates the pelvic ganglion, which causes contraction of the colon and diarrhea.
Treatment of constipation: in a clinical series of 100 cases, granules of Folium Sennae (fan xie ye) dissolved in warm water were very effective in treating post partum constipation.
