Cassia Bark
|
| Constituents: |
Cassia Bark contains volatile oils,
chiefly cinnamic aldehyde, also contains small
amount of cinnamye acetate, phenylpropyl ace-
tate, as well as cinnamic acid, coumarin,
choline, tannin, etc.. Cassia Twig contains
volatile oils, chiefly including cinnamic aldehyde.

| Pharmacology Actions: |
Cinnamic oil is an
aromatic stomachic and carminative. It weakly
stimulates the gastrointestinal tract, promotes
salivary and gastric secretion and strengthens
the digestive action. It also relieves spasm of
the smooth muscle of internal organs and
relieves pain due to intestinal spasm. (But
these are also contrary reports). Cinnamic
aldehyde suppressed the formation of stress
ulcer in mice. It also showed a significant
hypotensive action when used as a mixed com-
pound with the lateral root-tuber of Aconitum
carmichaeli in rats with adrenocortical hyper-
tension resulting from the burning of one of
the adrenal glands. Its decoction increased
coronary flow in the isolated heart of guinea
pigs and partially antagonized pituitrin in
reducing the coronary flow. It could markedly
inhibit APP-induced rat platelet aggregation
either in vitro or by IV.It also showed incre-
mental effect on leukocytes and radiation pro-
tective action. The decoction had an inhibitory
action against fungi in vitro. The LD50 in mice
as 18.4¡À1.8 (crude drug)/kg IV.

| Actions and Indications: |
Cassia Bark is used as
cold-dispelling agent, analgesic, emmenagogue;
for the treatment of impotence, frigidity,
dyspnea, dizziness,pharyngitis,precordialan and
abdominal pain with cold sensation,vomiting and
diarrhea, abdominal colic, gastrointestinal
neurosis with a feeling of gas ascending within
the abdomen,amenorrhea,dysmenorrhea.Cassia Twig
is used as sudorific, emmenagogue, carminative
and lentitive;for the treatment of common cold,
epigastric pain with cold feeling, amenorrhea,
arthralgia,edema, cardiac palpitation, gastro-
intestinal neurosis with a feelling of masses
of gas ascending within the abdomen.
