Officinal Magnolia Bark

| Constituents: |
Officinal Magnolia Bark contains magnolol,
honokiol, isomagnolol. and bolatile oils
of which eudesmol as major component and
the miner ones including ¦Á-pinene,limonene,
bornylacetate,also contains alkaloids:magno-
curarine,magnoflorine,liriodenine,salicifol-
ine, michelabine, anonaine.

| Pharmacology Actions: |
The experiments indi-
cated that its injection increased the tole-
rance of animals to high temperature. Both in
vivo and in vitro studies showed that this herb
promoted the phagocytic function of the peri-
toneal macrophages in mice when used with Lycium
chinensis. The aqueous infusion or ethanol
infusion caused an increase of erythrocytes,
decrease of leukocytes, relative increase of
neutrophils and decrease of lymphocytes in rab-
bits. Its decoction markedly elevated the blood
glucose level in rabbits by intragastric
administration. Transient hypotension was
produced by the aqueous and ethanol extracts of
it by intravenous injection to anaesthetized
dogs and rabbits.No tachyphylaxis from repeated
dosings was observed. Besides, the injection
showed stimulant effects on isolated rat uteri.
The LD50 of its injection in mice was 79.21¡À
3.60g/kg IP.

Officinal Magnolia Bark
is used as dampness dissipating aromatic agent,
expectorant, carminative; for the treatment of
thoracalgia, abdominalgia,meteorism,dyspepsia,
constipation, cough, tachypnea, etc. Officinal
Magnolia Flower is used as qi regulator and
damp-disspating agent;for the treatment of
sensation of stuffiness and distention in the
chest and epigastrium, poor appetite.
