| Constituents: |
The drug contains paeoniflorin,
oxypaeoniflorin,benzoylpaeoniflorin,benzoyllxy-
paeoniflorin, paeonol, paeonoside, paeonolide,
apiopaeonoside.

| Pharmacology Actions: |
In vitro studies showed
that the root bark decoction had strong anti-
bacterial action. Paeonol, the 70% methanol
extract of the herb, the water soluble fraction
and the glycoside fraction of the herb minus
paeonol exhibited significant inhibitory action
against swelling of rat paws due to agar. They
also showed hypotensive action in anesthetized
dogs and rats. Intragastric administration also
had analgesic action in mice, and decreased the
spontaneous activity of mice and antagonized
caffeine-induced hyperactivity and prolonged
cyclobarbital sodium-induced sleep by IP or
oral administration. It also had antipyretic
and anti-early pregnancy effect in mice. The
LD50 of paeonol in mice was 781mg/kg IP.

The drug is used as
febrifuge, bloodpurifying agent, bloodactivator;
for the treatment of maculae caused by fever,
hematemesis and epistaxis, consumptive fever,
amenorrhea and dysmenorrhea; carbuncles and
sores, traumatic injuries.
