| Constituents: |
The heart wood contains brasilin,
which is liable to be oxidized into red brasip-
lein and sappain, and also contains tannin and
volatile oil with d-¦Á-phellandrene as major
ingredients.

| Pharmacology Actions: |
The soaked water
perfused into toad hind limbs showed weak
vasoconstriction action. It strengthened the
constriction on the isolated frog heart. It
detoxicated the toxicity caused by chloralhy-
drate or quinine or pilocarpine physostigmine
or nicotine. Appropriate water solution of C.
sappan showed hypnotic action on mice,rabbits,
guinea pigs by different administration, but
showed anesthetic effect even caused death at
high dose. Its decoction (10%) showed antibac-
terial action against many common pathogens.

| Actions and Indications: |
The drug is used as
blood-activator, antiswelling agent,analgesic;
for the treatment of amenorrhea, dysmenorrhea,
blood stasis after delivery, pricking pain in
the chest and abdomen, traumatic swelling and
pain.
