| Pharmacology Actions: |
Antibiotic effect: Radix Lithospermi (zi cao) has been shown to have an inhibitory efect in vitro against various pathogenic viruses and bacteria including Staphylococcus aureus.
Use in infectious diseases:There have been many studies testing the efficacy of various preparations of Radix Arnebiae seu Lithospermi (zi cao) in the prevention of measles. The rate of success varies widely, but results are consistent in demonstrating that the herb is of no use when given to children during the latent phase of the disease.
Antineoplastic effect: Radix Lithospermi (zi cao) demonstrated some antineoplastic effect in preliminary tests against chorionepithelioma, chorioadenoma, and acute lymphocytic leukemia. It also appeared to reduce the rate of breast cancer in rats.
Endocrine effect: Extraction of Radix Lithospermi (zi cao) given to rats with their food inhibited the estrual cycle.Normal mice given this herb for two months showed a marked reduction in ovulation without any measurable influence on the other endocrine organs.
Cardiovascular effect: Decoctions of Radix Arnebiae(zi cao) strongly stimulated the hearts of rabbits and frogs. It is thought that this effect was related to the calcium content of the herb.

| Actions and Indications: |
Clears heat, cools the blood, and relieves fire toxicity while ventingrashes: for encouraging rashes to surface, or, if the course of the disease (such as measles or chickenpox) is not progressing well, for encouraging the complete expression of the rash. often used for fire toxin with very dark purple rashes.
Clears damp-heat from the skin: applied topically for damp-heat skin lesions or vaginal itching. Asoco used for burns.
Moistens the intestines and unblocks the bowels: for heat in the blood accompanied by constipation.
