Ephedra Root

| Constituents: |
Ephedra Root contains I-tyrosine
betaine, ephedradine, mahuanine, etc.; Ephedra
Herb contains I-phedradine,d-pseudoephedradine,
and some d-norpseudoephedradine.

| Pharmacology Actions: |
Ephedrine strengthens
cardiac contractility and increases the cardiac
output. Large doses depressed the heart. The
total emulsion of its volatile oil depressed
the isolated toad heart. It was also found to
initially stimulate and later depress rabbit
respiration. Ephedrine at a certain dosage was
shown to antagonize the sedative effect of the
volatile oil emulsion in mice. The emulsion of
its volatile oil reduced artificial fever in
rabbits. Its volatile oil and trepanned showed
a hypothermic effect in normal mice. In vitro
studies proved that its decoction had different
degrees of antibacterial actions. The volatile
oil was shown to inhibit and to have the thera-
peutic effect against certain flu virus. The
LD50 of the volatile oil in mice was 1.35 ml/kg.

Ephedra Root is used as
antihidrotic; for the treatment of spontaneous
and night sweating, etc.. Ephedra Herb is used
as diaphoretic, antiasthmatic, diuretic; for
the treatment of common cold with wind-cold
syndrome, edema,bronchial asthma and bronchitis.
