Laxative effect: Mirabilitum (mang xiao) is not absorbed in the intestines, thereby increasing the water in the lumen by osmotic pressure and stimulating peristalsis. no injury to the mucosa results unless the concentration in the duodenum is too high. For this reason, it best to drink a lot of fluids when taking this substance. The laxative effect usually occurs within 4-6 hours after ingestion.
Gastrointestinal effect: A plaster of powdered Mirabilitum (mang xiao), Radix et Rhizoma Rhei (da huang), and garlic mixed with vinegar, applied topically to the abdominal wall of rebbits with experimentally-induced appendicites, significantly increased the activity of the reticuloendothelial system, especially in the appendix and spleen, with an increase in phagocitosis. The inflammation ofthe appendix in this group was also significantly lower than in a control group. In another experiment it was shown that a paste of this substance and garlic applied to the lowerright quadrant of the abdomen resulted in local stimulation as evidenced by erythema and the formation of blisters. There was also an increase of motion in the small intestine, appendix, and cecum which was reduced when the area was first blocked with procaine, thereby demonstrating that a nervous reflex is probably involved.
