Drug Sweetflag Rhizome
|
| Constituents: |
Rhizome contains 1.5-3.5 percent of volatile
oils comprised of ¦Á-, ¦Â-asarone, 1-allyl-2,
4, 5-trimethoxy benzene,cis-methylisoeugenol,
trans-methylisoeugenol, methyleugenol.
Rhizome also contains calamendiol,isocalamen-
diol, preisocalamendiol, acorenone, shyobu-
none, isoshyobunone, epi-shyobunone, acorone,
acoragermacrone,acolamone, isoacolamone,etc..

| Pharmacology Actions: |
1. Sedative effect: The decoction, extract,
volatile oil of the drug showed sedative ef-
fect in mice , rats , cats, dogs and monkeys.
The decoction 5-10g/kg minimized the sponta-
neous activity in mice. The decoction, vola-
tile oil 0.1ml/kg had synergism to pentobar-
bital.
2. Paralyzing action on smooth muscles: Oral
administration of the drug could promote the
secretion of gastric juice, inhibit abnormal
fermentation in gastrointestinum, and relax
intestines smooth spasm. The volatile oil of
the drug 1:500,000 could weaken acetylcholine-
induced isolated ileum excitation in guinea
pig.
3. Antibacterial action: The decoction of the
drug showed inhibitory action against Staphy-
lococcus aureus, Diplococcus pneumoniae. ¦Á-
asarone showed different degree of inhibitory
action against Staphylococcus aureus, Diplo-
coccus pneumoniae, Escherichia coli. The vola-
tile oil 10(g/ml showed different degree inhi-
bitory action against gram-positive bacteria,
gram-negative bacilli. The aqueous decoction
(1:3) inhibited some fungi: in vitro.
4. Other actions: The decoction 1:2 showed pa-
ralysis and kill swine ascarides.

| Actions and Indications: |
The drug is used to reduce phlegm, induce re-
suscitation, replenish the function of spleen,
remove rheumatic condition; for the treatment
of epilepsy, forgetfulness, confusion of the
mind, diarrhea and dysentery, rheumatic pains,
sores and carbuncles.
