The drug contains saussurine,
costuslactone, dihydrocostuslactone, ¦Á-costol,
¦Á-costic acid,saussurea lactone, dehydrocostue
lactone, costunolide, dihydrodehydrocostus
lactone, costene, etc..

| Pharmacology Actions: |
Its aqueous extract,
volatile oil and total alkaloids showed initial
slight excitation action on the isolated intes-
tines of roots, succeeded by the significant
decrease of intensity and rhythm. It had direct
relaxation action on intestinal movement. Its
volatile oil at low concentration showed unpro-
longed inhibitory action on isolated rabbit
heart, but quick to recover. Its aqueous ex-
tract, ethanol extract, volatile oil and total
alkaloids antagonized histamine and acetylcho-
line induced spasm in trachea and bronchus and
its injection showed certain inhibitory action
on respiration of anesthetized dogs. The vola-
tile oil at 1:3000 inhibited the growth of
streptococci and Staphylococcus aureus and
Stapylococcus albus, but was weak against
Escherichia coli, Corynebacterium diphtheriae.

The drug is used as
analgesic, stomachic; for the treatment of dis-
tending pain in the chest and epigastrium,
tenesmus in dysentery, diarrhea, vomiting,etc..
