The drug contains berberine,
palmatine, jatrorrhizine, coptisine, worenine,
magnoflorine, ferulic acid, epiberine, etc..

| Pharmacology Actions: |
In vitro studies, the
rhizome and berberine showed potent anti-
bacterial action against many pathogenic bac-
teria (except Shigella sonnei). Berberine was
shown to be bacteriostatic at low concentrations
and bactericidal at high concentrations. The
rhizome preparation or berberine was shown to
inhibit various influenza viruses and newcastle
disease virus cultured in chicken embryo,
amoebae and 13 skin fungi. In dogs with
experimental septicemia of Staphylococcus
aureus, injection of berberine 19mg/kg IV
increased the leukocytic phagocytosis of
Staphylococcus aureus and precluded the death
of the animals.Berberine at low doses(2-5mg/kg)
enhanced the phagocytic function of the
reticuloendothelial system in rabbits. In mice,
berberine lowered the rectal temperature,
decreased the spontaneous activity and pro-
longed th e cyclobarbital and pentobarbital-
induced sleep. Significant antipyretic effect
was exhibited by this agent against milk-
induced fever in rabbits and that induced by
yeast suspension in rats. Berberine decreased
the pressor effect of epine-phrine. On the ECG,
berberine was shown to counteract arrhythmia
induced by epinephrine and norepinephrine in
rabbits. A clear hypotensive effect was ob-
served after in injection of berberine to
experimental animals. It also had choleric
action through moderately increasing bile out-
put, and antiinflammation action etc..

The drug is used as
antibiotic, antipyretic,dampness-drying agent;
for the treatment of fidget and insomnia,
stuffiness and fullness sensation in the abdo-
-men, or causing cute dysentery, inflammation
of the eye, ulcers in the mouth or on the ton-
gue, eczema, scalds, spitting of blood and
epistaxis.
