| Constituents: |
The drug contains alkaloids
including berberine, magnoflorine, phelloden-
drine, palmatine, as well as lactone, sterol,
mucilage, etc..

| Pharmacology Actions: |
Drug Description Flat or shallowly channelled,
varying in size, 3-6 mm thick. Outer surface
yellowish-brown or brown,flat or longitudinally
furrowed, some showing traces of lenticels, and
remains of greyish-brown rough bark. Inner sur-
face dark yellow or pale brown,with fine longi-
tudinal ridges. Texture hard, Light, fractured
surface fibrous, showing lobelike layers, dark
yellow. Odour, slight; taste, very bitter, vis-
cous after chewing. Fig.

| Actions and Indications: |
The drug is used as
febrifuge, detoxicant; for the treatment of
dysentery, jaundice and morbid leukorrhea, uri-
nary system infection, seminal emission, con-
sumptive fever and night sweating, sores and
skin infection with local redness and swelling,
eczema with itching.
