Platycodon Root

| Constituents: |
The drug contains triterpenoid
saponins, such as platycodon D, platycodigenin,
platycodin D1, D2 and D3 , polygalacine D1 and
D2, and also have platycogenic acid A, B and C,
polygalacic acid.

| Pharmacology Actions: |
A marked antitussive
andexpectorant effects were demonstrated by its
decoction to experimental animals. The aqueous
or ethanol extract lowered the blood glucose
level and inhibited dietary hyperglycemia. The
ethanol extract showed more potent action than
that of the aqueous one. The crude preparation
of platycodin inhibited gastric secretion and
showed anti-peptic ulcer action and anti-infla-
mmatory action. Intravenous injection of the
crude preparation of platycodin to rats resul-
ted in a transient fall in the blood pressure,
bradycardia, and respiratory depression. It had
sedative, analgesic, antipyretic and antineo-
plastic effects. The LD50 of its decoction in
mice was 24g/kg PO.

| Actions and Indications: |
The drug is used as
expectorant, sore throat soothing agent, dis-
charging pus promotor; for the treatment of
cough with much phlegm, sore throat, hoarseness
of voice, lung abscess with purulent expectora-
tion, abscess difficult to burst after
suppuration.
